Taste Perception: Drosophila – A Model of Good Taste
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent studies of taste receptors in Drosophila show remarkable parallels with the mammalian gustatory system, although the pathways are anatomically distinct. These parallels may reflect crucial constraints in the design of taste detection systems.

Gustatory Perception and Behavior in Drosophila melanogaster
The sense of taste is essential for the survival of virtually all animals. Considered a 'primitive sense' and present in the form of chemotaxis in many bacteria, taste is also a sense of sophistication in humans. Regardless, taste behavior is a crucial activity for the world's most abundant (insects) and most successful (mammals) inhabitants, providing a means of discrimination between nutrient...

Introduction: Zinc deficiency is a health problem in many communities, especially among children because of growth spurt. Zinc deficiency can causegrowth limitation, delay in sexuel maturity, behavior disorders and abnormalities of immune system, susceptibility to respiratory and gasterointestinal infections and impairment of taste and smell perception. Material and Method: One of the methods ...
متن کاملDrosophila Sugar Receptors in Sweet Taste Perception, Olfaction, and Internal Nutrient Sensing
Identification of nutritious compounds is dependent on expression of specific taste receptors in appropriate taste-cell types [1]. In contrast to mammals, which rely on a single, broadly tuned heterodimeric sugar receptor [2], the Drosophila genome harbors a small subfamily of eight, closely related gustatory receptor (Gr) genes, Gr5a, Gr61a, and Gr64a-Gr64f, of which three have been proposed t...

The sense of taste allows animals to detect chemical substances in their environment to initiate appropriate behaviors: to find food or a mate, to avoid hostile environments and predators. Drosophila larvae are a promising model organism to study gustation. Their simple nervous system triggers stereotypic behavioral responses, and the coding of taste can be studied by genetic tools at the singl...
متن کاملTaste Perception and Coding in Drosophila
BACKGROUND Discrimination between edible and contaminated foods is crucial for the survival of animals. In Drosophila, a family of gustatory receptors (GRs) expressed in taste neurons is thought to mediate the recognition of sugars and bitter compounds, thereby controlling feeding behavior. RESULTS We have characterized in detail the expression of eight Gr genes in the labial palps, the fly's...
